Daybreakers is the third film by Australian brothers Peter and Michael Spierig. What human flesh was to Undead, human blood is to Daybreakers. Ethan Hawke plays a research scientist in 2017. He does such a great job with the trendy “tortured-vampire-with-a-heart” look. We could be wrong, but this may be his first vampire role. Wilem Dafoe, who is one of our personal favorites, apparently is a human cured of the vampire virus. You can catch him armed with a crossbow when you watch Daybreakers online. It is cute that his character’s name is Elvis, right? Let’s hope he knows how to use that crossbow effectively. Chances are, he does, but even if he doesn’t, it is always good to see him onscreen.
Sam Neill, another favorite, also stars as Hawke’s boss. Just by watching Daybreakers online, it is clear he is part of a corporate ladder you do not want to be under. Even without the vertically slit eyes, he is great at doing “evil”. Watch Daybreakers online and, even in the short clip you see, his delivery is chilling.
It looks like the Spierigs have a great follow-up to Undead with this movie. The film raises all sorts of questions, though, like is this the Spierig twins’ take on the aftermath of the much talked about year, 2012? And if so, is it really worth the time to quit smoking now?
